Fathers' Rights Attorney in Bossier City
Protecting Your Relationship With Your Children
As a father, few things are more frightening than feeling your time with your children slipping away. At Ryan E. Gatti, Attorney At Law, we work with fathers who want to stay closely involved in their children’s lives and are unsure how Louisiana family courts will view their situation. We listen, explain your options in plain language, and help you decide on a path that fits your goals as a father.

Challenges Unique to Fathers
While the law is gender-neutral on its face, fathers often face uphill battles in practical application. Social stigmas and historical roles can sometimes influence how a father’s involvement is perceived by mediators or opposing counsel.
The "Primary Caregiver" Hurdle
In many households, if the mother has historically handled more of the day-to-day scheduling, school runs, or doctor appointments, a father may find himself fighting the assumption that he is less "equipped" for primary or shared physical custody. We help fathers document their active involvement to prove their capacity to provide a stable, nurturing environment.
Establishing Paternity
For unmarried fathers in Bossier City, rights are not automatic. Even if your name is on the birth certificate, you may lack legal standing to demand visitation or share in major decisions until paternity is formally established. We guide men through the process of Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP) or court-ordered genetic testing to secure their legal standing.
Overcoming Move-Away Requests
Louisiana law is strict regarding relocation. If a mother seeks to move the child out of the Bossier City area, it can effectively sever the father’s bond. We represent fathers in contesting relocations that are not in the child’s best interest.
Protecting Your Rights Under Louisiana Law
Louisiana Civil Code and recent 2026 legislative updates emphasize that joint custody is the preferred arrangement. The court considers several factors under Article 134 to determine what serves the child best, including:
- Emotional Ties: The love and affection existing between the father and child.
- Capacity to Provide: The ability to provide food, clothing, medical care, and a stable home.
- Stability: The length of time the child has lived in a stable environment.
- Co-Parenting Willingness: Which parent is more likely to allow the child frequent contact with the other parent?
At Ryan E. Gatti, Attorney At Law, we build a case that highlights your strengths in these areas, ensuring the court sees the full picture of your dedication as a parent.
Father's Rights FAQs
Do I have rights if I am not married to the mother?
In Louisiana, if you are not married, you must legally establish paternity before you have a right to custody or visitation. This is typically done by signing an Acknowledgment of Paternity or filing a paternity suit. Once established, you have the same rights as a married father.
Can I get 50/50 custody in Bossier City?
Yes. Louisiana law presumes that joint custody is in the best interest of the child. While "joint" doesn't always mean a perfect 50/50 split of time, courts are increasingly moving toward shared physical custody arrangements when both parents live in close proximity, such as within the Bossier-Shreveport area.
How is child support calculated for fathers?
Louisiana uses the Income Shares Model. This takes the combined income of both parents and calculates the amount of support the child would have received if the parents lived together. The obligation is then divided proportionally. If you have shared custody (more than 110 nights per year), your child support payment may be significantly adjusted.
Can I stop the mother from moving my child away?
If a parent intends to move a child more than 75 miles away (or out of state), they must provide formal notice. As a father, you have the right to object. The court will then hold a hearing to determine if the move is in "good faith" and in the child’s best interest.
Why Fathers Turn To Our Firm
When fathers come to us, they are often frustrated, worried, and unsure whether anyone in the court system will truly hear their side of the story. We take that concern seriously. From the first meeting, we make time to listen, ask questions, and understand what matters most to you and your children. Our goal is to help you feel heard, informed, and supported at every step.
Our firm focuses on the issues that surround families, including divorce, child custody, child support, and adoption. That means we regularly work with the same Louisiana laws and local procedures that shape your case. We are familiar with how judges in Bossier Parish and Caddo Parish typically approach the best interests of the child, and we use that knowledge to present your role as a father clearly and thoughtfully.
Because we are a community-focused practice, we see every fathers’ rights case as a chance to strengthen local families. Attorney Ryan E. Gatti’s lifelong ties to Shreveport and Bossier City give our firm a personal understanding of the pressures local parents face. Our team also includes lawyers with prosecutorial backgrounds, which adds a valuable courtroom perspective when custody or support disputes become highly contested. For you, this means a combination of compassionate guidance and focused advocacy when you need it most.
