Possessing more than 14 grams on a first conviction raises that to up to six months in parish jail and a $500 fine, with penalties escalating on subsequent convictions. Possession of other Schedule I drugs, or of Schedule II through V substances, is generally charged as a felony, with sentencing that can reach years of imprisonment at hard labor and fines in the tens of thousands of dollars.
